In a somewhat surprising turn of events, Manchester United have extended the contract of defender Phil Jones till 2023. The 26-year-old centre back has made 15 appearances this season and has been one of the starters at the centre back position under the caretaker manager, Ole Gunner Solskjaer. The Englishman was out of contract this summer and United have secured the future of the player. The new deal also includes an option from the club’s side to extend the agreement by a further 12 months.

Here is what Solskjaer had to say about Jones: “Phil knows what it takes to be a Manchester United player, he has won the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League and is now one of the senior players within the team.”

He further added, “He is coming up to his 27th birthday and entering into his prime years as a centre-half. We are delighted Phil has committed his future to the club.”

The former Barcelona striker Patrick Kluivert has advised his former club to sign Marcus Rashford as a successor for the ageing Luis Suarez. He also added that only Rashford, along with Aubameyang, is good enough to play as a striker for the Catalan giants.

Although Suarez is still playing good football, he is 32 now and Kluivert feels that his former should look at the United youngster as a possible successor.

The Dutchman, who himself was an explosive striker, said: “I like Marcus Rashford, a lot. It will be really difficult to get him over. But he is a good player.

“I don’t see a lot of players who can play in Barcelona. [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang, perhaps he can play.

“There is not a lot. Maybe some players who can play in La Liga, young players. But, for me, I think the best one is Marcus Rashford.”
